Fast Spectral Clustering Using Autoencoders and Landmarks

In this paper, we introduce an algorithm for performing spectral clustering efficiently. Spectral clustering is a powerful clustering algorithm that suffers from high computational complexity, due to eigen decomposition. In this work, we first build the adjacency matrix of the corresponding graph of the dataset. To build this matrix, we only consider a limited number of points, called landmarks, and compute the similarity of all data points with the landmarks. Then, we present a definition of the Laplacian matrix of the graph that enable us to perform eigen decomposition efficiently, using a deep autoencoder. The overall complexity of the algorithm for eigen decomposition is O(np)O(np), where nn is the number of data points and pp is the number of landmarks. At last, we evaluate the performance of the algorithm in different experiments.Comment: 8 Pages- Accepted in 14th International Conference on Image Analysis and Recognitio

Photo-oxidative action in cervix carcinoma cells induced by HpD — mediated photodynamic therapy

    No full text
Photodynamic therapy leads to oxidative stress through the generation of free radicals. Oxidative stress causes damage to cellular macromolecules such as nucleic acids, proteins and lipids. Aim: To examine the hematoporphyrin derivative (HpD) — mediated photodynamic effect on cervical adenocarcinoma cell line HeLa. Methods: The HpD localization in HeLa cells was analyzed by confocal microscopy with epi-fluorescence system. Lipid peroxidation (LPO) was estimated by measurement of the concentration of malondialdehyde, protein degradation — by modified Ellman’s method, superoxide dysmutase (SOD) — using Ransod Kit. The expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) was detected by immunocytochemical staining. Results: The HpD was distributed all over the cytoplasm with preferential localization in the inner side of the plasma membrane and around the nuclear envelope. The process of photosensitizer distribution was time dependent. PDT-HpD increased the level of malonodialdehyde (MDA), SOD activity and the expression of iNOS in HeLa cells. However, PDT induced the decrease in the level of protein-associated thiol groups. Conclusions: Our study showed the important role of PDT-mediated oxidative stress in HeLa cells. HpD-PDT might be alternative and less invasive approach for treatment of patients with cervical cancer resistant for standard chemotherapy and radiotherapy

    Geometric deep learning

The goal of these course notes is to describe the main mathematical ideas behind geometric deep learning and to provide implementation details for several applications in shape analysis and synthesis, computer vision and computer graphics. The text in the course materials is primarily based on previously published work. With these notes we gather and provide a clear picture of the key concepts and techniques that fall under the umbrella of geometric deep learning, and illustrate the applications they enable. We also aim to provide practical implementation details for the methods presented in these works, as well as suggest further readings and extensions of these ideas

Temporal variations of disinfection byproduct precursors in wildfire detritus

The Rim Fire ignited on August 17, 2013 and became the third largest wildfire in California history. The fire consumed 104,131 ha of forested watersheds that were the drinking water source for 2.6 million residents in the San Francisco Bay area. To understand temporal variations in dissolved organic matter (DOM) after the wildfire and its potential impacts on disinfection byproduct (DBP) formation in source water supply, we collected the 0-5 cm ash/soil layer with surface deposits of white ash (high burn severity) and black ash (moderate burn severity) within the Rim Fire perimeter in Oct 2013 (pre-rainfall) for five sequential extractions, and in Dec 2013 (∼87 mm cumulative precipitation) and Aug 2014 (∼617 mm cumulative precipitation) for a single water extraction. Water-extractable DOM was characterized by absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy and DBP formation tests. Both increasing cumulative precipitation in the field or number of extractions in the lab resulted in a significant decrease in specific conductivity, dissolved organic carbon, and DBP formation potential, but an increase in DOM aromaticity (reflected by specific UV absorbance). However, the lab sequential leaching failed to capture the increase of the NOx(-)-N/NH4(+)-N ratio and the decrease in pH and dissolved organic carbon/nitrogen ratio of ash/soil extracts from Oct 2013 to Aug 2014. Increasing cumulative precipitation, inferring an increase in leaching after fire, led to an increase in DOM reactivity to form trihalomethanes, haloacetic acids, and chloral hydrate, but not for haloketones, haloacetonitrile, or N-nitrosodimethylamine, which were more related to the original burn severity. This study highlights that fire-affected DBP precursors for different DBP species have distinct temporal variation possibly due to their various sensitivity to biogeochemical alterations

Measuring of the Basic Parameters of LCD Displays

    No full text
This article is about realization of the laboratory stand used for measuring parameters of LCD displays. The stand together with additional accessories (spectrophotometer and measuring probes) as well as software allow to measure a wide range of parameters (colour gamut, response time, contrast coefficient and its irregularity, luminance of black colour and its irregularity, luminance of white colour and its irregularity, changes of luminance depending on the viewing angle). This paper also show method and results of measurements of differences in contrast ratio and luminance uniformity between particular pieces of the same model of a display screen (research has been carried out on 5 pieces of the same model of a display). The presented results show that the measured value of the viewing angle may significantly differ from the value provided by producers of displays
